The young man stared back at her in amazement. The woman didn't look anything at all like he expected. |

Jubell knew what the young man was thinking. She walked gracefully across the room and took his coat. She ushered him over to the fireplace. "It's a rather nasty day for such a long journey," she said. |

"How . . . how do you know how far I've come?" the young man stuttered. |

"A mere parlor trick," she admitted. Then she turned to the man with the haunted face and hollow eyes who had let the young man in. "Our guest looks weary from his journey. Why don't you get him something to drink, Charles?" |
